Screening of the Documentary ‘Revisiting Samskara’: Curtain Raiser
We the Concerned for Working Children are delighted to invite you to the screening of the documentary ‘Revisiting Samskara’ on the occasion of the birth centenary of Sri Pattabhirama Reddy, a renowned poet, filmmaker, philosopher, social thinker and a visionary.
CWC had the privilege of having him as the president of its executive council. Father of one of our founder members, Ms Nandana Reddy, the entire team of CWC is honoured to be guided and inspired by him. During the course of his life, Sri Reddy had actively championed the causes upheld by CWC. We are also privileged to be associated with the making of the film and the documentary.
In the documentary, director Ashwathi Rajakrishnan revisits its making from a cultural, social and political perspective. The documentary will be released on 16th February 2019 at 6 PM at the Alliance Française de Bangalore. Do join us for the screening.
About Samskara:
Samskara (English title: Funeral Rites) is a 1970 Indian Kannada-language film written by U. R. Ananthamurthy based on his novel of the same name, and directed and produced by Pattabhirama Reddy. It was indeed a path-breaking venture and has pioneered the parallel cinema movement in Kannada.
Samskara garnered the President’s Gold Medal for the National Award for Best Feature Film 1971, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for Best Direction 1971 and the Bronze Leopard Locarno Film Festival 1972 among others among. Samskara was initially banned by the Madras Censor Board before being revoked by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting because it was felt that the strong anti-caste message being conveyed could spark tensions among the public. However, it was released later and went on to win awards at national and international levels.
