United Nations General Assembly adopts the International Day Of Play – Call To Action
Posted on March 26, 2024
We are thrilled to announce that the United Nations General Assembly has adopted June 11th as the International Day of Play!
This milestone marks a significant step towards recognising the importance of play in children’s lives worldwide.
But that’s not all! Alongside this historic endorsement, we are proud to unveil the launch of the Children and Young People’s Call to Action.- in which children from Udupi and Vijayanagara Districts of Karnataka, who we partner with,- have made strong and effective recommendations on the importance of Play. Their involvement was part of extensive global online consultations and focus group discussions involving over 10,000 children. Further, a few of our children were nominated to be members of the Children and Youth Advisory Group (CAYAG), who, with the support of the facilitating NGOS, including CWC, developed the Children and Young People’s Call to Action. Their voices have spoken loud and clear, providing invaluable insights and recommendations to the UN, governments, civil society organizations, parents, and businesses.
Their findings highlight the critical role of play in enhancing children’s learning and healthy development. From fostering creativity and problem-solving skills to promoting mental well-being and social interaction, play is fundamental to a child’s holistic development.
As we embark on this journey, we call upon all stakeholders to join us in championing the rights of children to play. Together, let’s create environments that nurture and prioritize play, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive through play.
The consultations with children and young people have been supported by the @Child and Youth Friendly Governance Project in collaboration with @BRAC, @Concerned for Working Children, the @Government of Sierra Leone, @International Play Association, @University of Cambridge, and @The LEGO Group.
